Voices on the Wind
Rumba at the Dance Studio
by Wilda Morris
The over-weight grey-haired woman
and tall balding man have mastered
the basic box step and simple rocks,
but he canít remember to lower his hand
to guide her into the walk-across.
She forgets whether the step
where they angle their feet counts
as one of the three, turns too late.
Her feet resist internalizing the cross-over.
She steps too far, throws herself off balance.
He doesnít remember how to bring her back
into the basic box when itís time.
Their rumba is totally graceless
except for the grace of trying
and trying and trying again.
