Voices on the Wind Voices on Aging
Housekeeping by James F. Gaines To be as large as I need My house is larger than I can handle One never knows what to expect So boxes stretch invisible legs In my vast unfinished basement I have trouble keeping so many rooms Not to count hallways Clean for visitors Who never arrive I dream of weekly maid service Out of the question not from cost But from my shuddering At instructions I would have to give Just telling which papers not to move Might by itself take longer than a week So I mix Pinesol in a plastic painterís pail Thinking gloomily how long it will take To swab up footprints and all the pawprints And coffee spilt on clumsy Uncertain mornings
